Description

Built in the latter half of the 15th century, the Castle of Nagyvázsony is one of the most important mediaeval fortresses in the Balaton Uplands. In 1472, King Matthias I donated the estate to General Pál Kinizsi in recognition of his military prowess.
The castle with its square keep is situated in a low-lying part of Nagyvázsony, in a favourable location near the main trade route and an ample source of water. Parts of the castle and ruins of the nearby Saint Michael monastery survived until modern times. Restoration work began in the latter half of the 20th century, with some portions of the buildings reconstructed on the basis of archaeological excavations.
In accordance with the 21st-century approach to historical preservation, the buildings are not merely preserved, but also presented as an experience. Recent developments include routes for visitors to explore the castle, safe stairways, and information points, with certain restored parts of the buildings helping visitors to see how the fortress once looked. Thanks to this, the Kinizsi Castle in Nagyvázsony is more than just a historical monument: it is a living part of Hungary’s cultural heritage.

Front: The front of the coin features a depiction of the interior courtyard of the reconstructed Nagyvázsony Castle. The circular legend “MAGYARORSZÁG” (Hungary) is found at the top, with the denomination and “FORINT” in two horizontal lines at the bottom centre.
Back: The back shows an external view of the castle, with the Gothic keep and barbican. The circular legend “NAGYVÁZSONYI VÁR” (Castle of Nagyvázsony) is located at the top. Underneath the keep, offset to the left is the date “2026” and the mint mark “BP.” in two horizontal lines, with the master mark of the coin’s designer, Zoltán Tóth at the centre.
