Description

The second coin in the series Hungarian Castles
Roughly 8 km from the centre of Miskolc, at the foot of the Bükk mountains, one finds the Diósgyőr Castle in beautiful natural surroundings, which has an honoured place among Hungary’s ancient monuments. An earthen fortress already stood here at the time of the Hungarian conquest, which was likely destroyed during the Mongol invasion. The son of Ban Ernye, Palatine István built the first stone castle at this location, which is the predecessor the current edifice. The golden age of the Castle was under the reign of King Louis the Great in the 14th century. During the time of King Louis the Castle played an important historical role. In 1381, the Treaty of Turin ending the king’s wars with Venice was signed there. That marked the beginning of a period lasting until 1526, when the Castle was the dowry and rural residence of six queens, giving the Castle a name it bears unto this very day: the Castle of Queens.

Front: The front of the coin depicts a Medieval knight, whose lance extends upwards between the “5” and the “0” in the denomination “5000” located the middle of the top section.  The front also has the legend “MAGYAR KÖZTÁRSASÁG” and the mint mark BP.
Back:The reverse features the Diósgyőr Castle. The coin was designed by the sculptor Enikő Szöllőssy.
