János Irinyi was one of the most talented Hungarian chemists. In modern recollection, he is best known for his activities with matches, as he patented the first noiseless match, but during his day and age he was one of the leading proponents of the new chemistry and played a key role in the development of chemical terminology in Hungarian. As a strongly patriotic Hungarian nobleman, he had already taken part in revolutionary movements, and his name is also associated with the famous 12 Points. He played an active role in the 1848-1849 Revolution and War of Independence.
Front: The front of the coin depicts the striking strip on the side of a box of matches, with a match lighting up in flame, as Irinyi’s most famous invention, which is still in use today. The front has the mandatory elements, such as the denomination “2000 FORINT”, the legend “MAGYARORSZÁG”, the date “2017” and a mint mark “BP.”.
Back:The back bears the portrait of János Irinyi, one of Hungary’s most talented chemists. The legend “IRINYI JÁNOS” is located above the portrait, with his date of birth and death next to it (1817–1895).
