Description

Part of the series presenting nature conservation
The European otter (Lutra lutra) is a predatory mammal that lives in the water. They are rarely seen in the wild, as they are almost exclusively nocturnal in the Carpathian Basin. Webbed feet and a streamlined body make otters very fast swimmers. Throughout the continent, the European otter is an endangered species and is extinct in many Western European countries and typical habits. Efforts are underway to reintroduce the otter in various locations.
