Description
Bar associations and the profession of lawyers can look back on a long history and have played a key role in developing Hungary’s legal system and supporting its constitutional institutions. On 4 December 1874, Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, assented to Act XXXIV, which established the legal conditions for the organisation of Hungarian lawyers. After entering into force in 1875, it led to the creation of regional chambers that ensured professional independence and a territorial organisational structure, as well as mandatory membership of these chambers for lawyers. Starting from January 1875, these regional bar associations began to form in the Kingdom of Hungary. Over the turbulent times of the last 150 years these professional associations, organised on the principles of self-governance and interest representation, have served the needs of lawyers and those seeking justice. Presently, there are 20 regional bar associations operating in Hungary at the county level and in Budapest.
with the law. The entire back of the coin can be seen as the imprint of the dry seal stamp. The ‘seal’
refers to the anniversary and also presents the motto of the lawyers’ profession.
In a circular legend on the back are the words ‘ÜGYVÉDI KAMARÁK’ (Bar association) at the top and ‘A JOGKERESŐK SZOLGÁLATÁBAN’ (Serving those who seek justice) at the bottom, with the legend ‘150 éve’ (150 years) in the centre, offset by a beaded ring; the zero in 150 can also be read as a section sign.
Horváth Andrea designed the back of the coin and her master mark can be found between the two circular legends on the right. The coin has a reeded edge with 150 grooves, once again highlighting this important anniversary.
