Description
The commemorative coin was issued to mark the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Great Synagogue in Dohány street . It is part of the series “Masterpieces of religious architecture”. The Dohány Street Synagogue (also known as the Great Synagogue)
the 2nd Largest, and the Most Beautiful in the World.
Front: In addition to the standard design elements (the denomination: 5000, the legend: Republic of Hungary, the mint mark: BP and the date of issue: 2009), the obverse of the coin features the traceried window above the main entrance of the Synagogue.
Back:The reverse bears an image of the Dohány street Synagogue in Budapest, designed by Ludwig Förster, with the facade built 150 years ago and some of the neighbouring buildings. The inscription DOHÁNY STREET SYNAGOGUE IN BUDAPEST 1859 is featured below the representation of the Synagogue. The signature mark of designer György Szabó is positioned to the left from the representation of the Synagogue.
