Description
The eighth of the medieval Hungarian gold forint series. In 2012, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank launched its series presenting the gold florins of medieval Hungary with a commemorative coin patterned on the gold florin of Charles I. The goal of this series is to provide a full overview of the history of Hungarian gold florins, a solid, stable currency that was often also used in international trade. True to the historical timeline, the first piece in the series was followed by coins presenting the gold florins of Louis I in 2013, Mary in 2014, Sigismund in 2016, Albert in 2018, Vladislaus I in 2020 and John Hunyadi in 2022.
Front:The front of the “Gold Florin of Ladislaus V” depicts the image from the back of the gold florin issued by Ladislaus V, with Saint Ladislaus shown in the outlined centre field holding a short battle axe and an orb. Inside the beaded edge on the front of the coin, the upper circular legend reads “MAGYARORSZÁG”, while the lower circular legend shows the denomination “50000” and “FORINT”, with the two legends separated by a flower motif.
Back:The back of the coin presents the figure of King Ladislaus V seated on his throne, partially extending above the circular central field, which is outlined with a beaded edge and features a web pattern. The image was inspired by an engraving from the Brno edition of the Thuróczi Chronicle issued in 1488. The King’s coat-of-arms is shown at the bottom. The mint mark “BP.” is located to the left of the image, with the mint date “2024” below and the designer mark of Tamás Soltra E. to the right. Inside a beaded edge, the circular legend on the back reads “V. LÁSZLÓ 1453–1457 ARANYFORINTJA” (Gold Florin of Ladislaus V, 1453–1457). The edge of the gold 1 ducat version is smooth.
