Description

The Saint Aegidius Benedictine monastery, founded by King Saint Ladislaus at Somogyvár in 1091, became an important ecclesiastic centre in the 12th century.

Front: The obverse of the collector coin bears a representation of the stone relief showing a griffin excavated at Somogyvár. The upper legend on the edge of the coin reads ‘MAGYARORSZÁG’. The inscription ‘FORINT’ appears in a lower legend, with the value numeral ‘2000’ placed above it. The mint mark ‘BP’ and the mint year ‘2014’ are positioned on the left and right, respectively.
Back: The reverse of the coin features a representation of the floor-plan of the Saint Aegidius Basilica and Benedictine monastery, built on Kupavár hill at Somogyvár, with a detail of the reconstructed cloister in the background. Along the upper edge, the coin is inscribed with ‘SOMOGYVÁR-KUPAVÁR’ and, on the lower edge, with ‘NEMZETI EMLÉKHELY’. The upper and lower legends are separated, on the left, by the emblem of the Memorial Site and, on the right, by the initials of designer Zoltán Tóth.
