Description

Millennium Underground Railway, Metro 1 or M1) is the oldest line of the Budapest Metro, it was built from 1894 to 1896. It is known locally as “the small underground” (“a kisföldalatti”). It is the first underground on the European mainland, and the world’s second oldest underground after the London Underground. Line 1 runs northeast from the city center on the Pest side under Andrássy út to the Városliget (City Park).

Front:“The central motif on the front of the coin depicts a cross-section view of
one of the Millennium Underground Railway’s stations, based on a 19thcentury blueprint. The drawing of the station shows the unique shallowdepth railway and how close it is to the surface. The station’s technical
drawing is made more lifelike by figures dressed in period attire.”
Back:The main motif on the back is a side view of a wood-panelled BFKVV
railcar used on the Underground Railway. The legend “MILLENNIUMI FÖLDALATTI VASÚT” is located above the drawing, with the dates 1896, marking the Underground Railway’s opening, and 2021, as the mint date. The designer’s mark appears as a copper
letter attached to the side of the car. The edge of the coin is adorned with the Zsolnay tile patterns which are found around the names of the stations.
