Description

Mária Telkes was born in Budapest on 12 December 1900. She studied chemistry and physics at the University of Budapest, receiving her PhD in 1924. After completing her studies, she started working in the United States, researching the use of solar energy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During this period, she created the first exclusively solar-heated home. She was responsible for many other patents and discoveries, most of which were related to the use of solar energy, but she also discovered cold storage, which generated massive development in the air conditioning industry. Her work was honoured with twelve international awards.

Front: The front of the coin shows Mária Telkes’ invention, the solar oven, with a stylised ray of sunshine coming from the upper right corner. Above the image on the left is the legend “MAGYARORSZÁG” and the denomination “3000” and “FORINT” in three lines. The legend “NAPKÁLYHA” (Solar Oven) is located in the lower left corner, while the date “2025” and the mint mark “BP.” are in the lower right corner, in two horizontal lines.
Back: The back of the coin features a portrait of Mária Telkes on the left, with a depiction of the first experimental solar-heated house to the right of the portrait and a stylised
ray of sunshine coming from the top right corner. Above the portrait, in three lines, is the legend “TELKES MÁRIA”, “NAP- KIRÁLYNŐ˝ (Sun Queen) and the years of her birth and death “1900-1995”, along with the legend “DOVERI NAPHÁZ” (Dover Sun House) below the house. The coin was designed by András Szilos.
