Description

János Apáczai Csere (1625 10 June – 31 December 1659) pedagogist, philosopher and Calvinist theologian was born to a poor family in the village of Apáca in the Barcaság area of Transylvania. After his college studies on an episcopal scholarship, he completed his education with a doctorate in theology in the Netherlands. He became an instructor at the college of Gyulafehérvár (present-day Alba Iulia) in 1653 and director of the Calvinist Kolozsvár School in 1656. He submitted a proposal for a Transylvanian university to the Prince of Transylvania, but the plans were not followed up on due to the conflict with the Ottoman Empire. Apáczai Csere was an important early figure in Hungarian education and the development of Hungarian technical language. Key sources for his life work included the Puritan work ethic, the Cartesian method and the desire for encyclopedic knowledge. As the first Hungarian encyclopedist, he was one of the early Hungarian proponents of the Cartesian method.

Back: The front of the coin is divided by a horizontal line, with the upper field featuring the printer’s emblem found on the cover of the “Magyar encyclopaedia” (Hungarian encyclopaedia) written by János Apáczai Csere in 1653-1655 in the Dutch city of Utrecht, with the mint year “2025” and mint mark “BP.” in two lines to the left and the denomination and “FORINT” in two lines to the right. The circular legend “MAGYARORSZÁG” (Hungary) is at the top. The lower field presents the title and subtitle of the work’s first edition, with the introductory text indicating the author, in eight lines: “MAGYAR| ENCYCLOPÆDIA.| Az az,| MINDEN IGAZ ES HASZNOS|Böltseségnek szep rendbe foglalá-|sa és Magyar nyelven világra botsátása.| APATZAI TSERE JANOS |által.” (Hungarian encyclopædia | Thus,| all knowledge true and useful | Properly ordered | and presented to the world in the Hungarian language. | By Janos Apatzai Tsere.)
