Description

One important aspect of the restoration work being performed as part of the National Hauszmann Programme was the reconstruction of the former headquarters of the Red Cross Society located at Dísz tér 1–2 in Budapest. The building was originally erected between 1901 and 1903 for the Red Cross Society of the Lands of the Hungarian Crown, based on the plans of Alajos Hauszmann and Dezső Hültl. The five-floor, corner building in historicist style was home to the Red Cross headquarters as well as rented flats, and ministerial and diplomatic offices. With its rich ornamentation
and domes, it fit in well with the eclectic urban cityscape of Buda’s Castle Quarter. The building was heavily damaged at the end of World War II and a political decision was made to demolish it. In view of the significance of this area, one of the goals of the National Hauszmann Programme was to rebuild the structure, and this work finally started in 2021.

Front: The central field of the front of the coin shows two arched, ornamental patterns based on the wallpaper of the building’s Saint Stephen Chamber, with the beaded line dividing the two motifs separated by the denomination “3000” and “FORINT”. Below this is a view of the facade of the building from around the turn of the 19th-20th century. The legend “MAGYARORSZÁG” (Hungary) and the date “2025” are in two lines at the top edge of the coin’s front, with the mint mark “BP.” to the left.
Back: The back of the coin features ornamental elements from the building’s facade, along with a detail view of a lion-headed column resting on a pedestal, in an abstract, model-like relief depiction. The legend “VÖRÖSKERESZT EGYLET EGYKORI SZÉKHÁZA” (Former Headquarters of the Red Cross Society) is located at the bottom on the back, with the designer mark of Zoltán Endrődy on the right.
