Description
Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county is located in the north-east of Hungary on the border to Slovakia. It covers an area of roughly 7,250 km², with a population of almost 620,000. Along with the county seat of Miskolc, the most important industrial centres are Ózd, Kazincbarcika and Tiszaújváros, while county’s outstanding cultural, historical and tourism centres include Sárospatak, Sátoraljaújhely, Mezőkövesd, and the heart of the world famous wine region, Tokaj. The county lies at the intersection of Hungary’s plains and northern mountains, encompassing the Bükk, Cserehát and Zemplén ranges. Its main landscape areas are separated by four major rivers, the Tisza, Bodrog, Sajó and Hernád. It is also home to two World Heritage sites: the caves of Aggtelek karst and the Tokaj wine region historic cultural landscape. The county’s rich natural heritage also features two national parks: Aggtelek National Park and Bükk National Park. Its varied landscapes, cultural heritage and natural treasures make it one of Hungary’s most valuable regions.
