Description
Árpád Tóth (1886-1925) was a Hungarian poet and translator. He was a major lyric poet and contributed to the Nyugat School. His core themes focused on fleeting happiness and resignation. He translated Milton, Oscar Wilde, Shelley, Keats, Baudelaire, Flaubert, Gautier, Maupassant, and Chekhov.
Front: On the obverse, the edge bears the legend ‘REPUBLIC OF HUNGARY’ on the upper part, as well as value numeral ‘5000’ and the inscription ‘FORINT’ on the lower part. The mint mark ‘BP.’ and the mint year ‘2011’, both positioned horizontally on the left edge of the collector coin, separate the upper and lower legends. The centre of the coin features a four-line quote from the poem ‘Az árnyból szőtt lélek’ (Soul Woven of Shadows) by Árpád Tóth, represented as a manuscript detail on a slightly crumpled sheet of paper. Below the quote, the coin bears the signature of Árpád Tóth.
Back:The reverse of the coin features the portrait of Árpád Tóth in the centre. The edge inscription, positioned to the right of the portrait, reads ‘ÁRPÁD TÓTH’. Also to the right of the portrait, the inscriptions ‘1886–’ and ‘1928’ are written in horizontal lines arranged one above the other. To the left of the portrait are the designer’s initials.
