During the Hungarian Revolution he acted as the Minister of State for the Hungarian National Government. When the Soviets invaded to crush the rebellious government, he was the last Minister left at his post in the Hungarian Parliament building in Budapest. Rather than evacuate, he stayed in the building and wrote his famous proclamation, “For Freedom and Truth”, as he awaited arrest. Bibó was arrested on 23 May 1957 and sentenced to life imprisonment on 2 August 1958 but released in the 1963 amnesty. Bibó received a law degree from the Franz Joseph University and later taught there. He also received a PhD from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, in Geneva.

Front: The obverse of the collector coin was designed by György Szabó. The inscription on the obverse rim of the coin reads in Hungarian ‘REPUBLIC OF HUNGARY’. Below it, the value numeral ‘5000’ and the inscription ‘FORINT’ are inscribed in two horizontal lines. On the rim of the coin, the mint mark ‘BP.’ and the mint year ‘2011’ are positioned to the left and right of the inscription ‘FORINT’, respectively. Below the line bisecting the obverse, in the centre field, is a quote in Hungarian from the proclamation by István Bibó issued on 4 November 1956, arranged in six horizontal lines: ‘THE PEOPLE OF HUNGARY HAVE SHED ENOUGH BLOOD TO DEMONSTRATE TO THE WORLD THEIR DEVOTION TO FREEDOM AND JUSTICE’. The inscription ‘István Bibó’ appears below the quote. The initials of designer György Szabó are positioned below, at the right centre on the rim of the coin.
Back:The reverse of the collector coin was designed by Mihály Fritz. The centre field on the reverse bears a portrait of István Bibó. The inscriptions ‘Bibó’, ‘István’ and ‘1911–1979’ appear in three horizontal lines. The right rim of the collector coin features the initials of Mihály Fritz, the designer of the reverse.
