Description
Count Lajos Batthyányi was the first prime minister of the Kingdom of Hungary. A martyr of the 1848–1849 Revolution and War of Independence, he held the office of prime minister from 17 March 1848 until 2 October 1849. Count László Teleki wrote of him, “He was a martyr to a grand, beautiful cause, who gave his soul back to God, but who will live on in our hearts eternally, his memory sustained until the last breath of the last Hungarian.”
Front: On the obverse there is the impression of Lajos Batthyány’s prime minister’s seal with the circular inscription “PRIME MINISTER’S SEAL 1848” in it and on the reverse there is a half-length portrait of Lajos Batthyány.
Back:To the left of the portrait is the legend “LAJOS BATTHYÁNY” and to the right are the dates of his birth and death “1807-1849”. Between the portrait and the circular legend on the right is the joint emblem of the “EUROPA” international collector coin series, the so-called “Euro-Star”.
