Description

Buda was liberated from the Turks on 2 September 1686, after an occupation lasting 145 years and four days. Recapturing the city was attempted five times before success was finally achieved in 1686. Liberation came after a siege lasting three months, as the castle’s commander Abdurrahman Abdi Arnavut Pasha held out till the bitter end.

Front: The front has the mandatory elements: the denomination 500 FORINT, the mint mark “BP.”, the date “1986”, the legend “MAGYAR NÉPKÖZTÁRSASÁG” and the master mark of the designer. The top line of the number 5 in the denomination 500 is formed like a sword of that period, with the two 0’s in the 500 hanging from the top of it.
Back:The back bears the legend “BUDAVÁR VISSZAVÉTELE 1686” above a contemporary view of Buda under Turkish occupation.
Keywords:History, siege, Buda, silver, 1986
