II. Rákóczi Ferenc 1676-ban született Borsiban, és már kisdedként az egyik leggazdagabb magyar főúri (fejedelmi) család egyedüli fiúörököse lett. Édesanyja, Zrínyi Ilona hősiesen védte Munkács várát a Habsburgok ellen, ami nagy hatással volt Rákóczi hazafias gondolkodására. A Rákóczi-szabadságharcot 1703-ban indította el a Habsburg-uralom ellen, és az ország nagy része hamarosan a kurucok kezére került. 1705-ben a szécsényi országgyűlés vezérlő fejedelemmé választotta, így ő lett a szabadságharc politikai és katonai vezetője. Diplomáciai érzékét mutatja, hogy kapcsolatot keresett több európai hatalommal, például XIV. Lajos francia királlyal is. A szabadságharc sorsát végül a trencséni csata (1708 pecsételte meg, ahol a kuruc sereg döntő vereséget szenvedett. Rákóczi nem fogadta el a szatmári békét, ezért inkább a száműzetést választotta, mintsem hogy hűséget esküdjön a császárnak. Élete utolsó éveit az Oszmán Birodalomban, Rodostóban (ma Tekirdağ, Törökország) töltötte. Hamvait csak 1906-ban hozták haza ünnepélyes keretek között, és a kassai dómban helyezték örök nyugalomra. Nevét ma számtalan utca, tér, iskola és még a híres Rákóczi-induló is őrzi, így alakja a magyar nemzeti emlékezet egyik legfontosabb szimbóluma.
Front: The main motif on the front of the coin is a depiction of the great wax seal of Francis II Rákóczi. The circular legend “MAGYARORSZÁG” (Hungary) is found on the upper right, set off from the wax seal by an interior line. The interior line is interrupted by the mint date “2026” and the mint mark “BP.” in two lines at the lower right, with the denomination “40000” and the legend “FORINT” at the bottom.
Back: The main motif on the left back of the coin is a half-profile portrait of Francis II Rákóczi, based on a painting by Ádám Mányoki from 1712. On the back right are the legends “350 ÉVE SZÜLETETT” and “II. RÁKÓCZI FERENC” (350th anniversary of the birth of Francis II Rákóczi) in five lines, set off from the edge of the coin by an interior line, which ends with the master mark of the coin’s designer Borbála Szanyi at the bottom. One unique feature of the coin is its edge (3rd side), which is much thicker than usual, with the silver version measuring 5.3 mm and the non-ferrous version 4.8 mm. Two of Rákóczi’s mottos feature on the edge of the coin, running in two lines in different directions, in Latin and Hungarian: – ISTEN AZ IGAZ ÜGYET NEM HAGYJA EL – IUSTAM CAUSAM DEUS NON DERELINQUET (God will not abandon a just cause) – ISTENNEL A HAZÁÉRT ÉS SZABADSÁGÉRT – CUM DEO PRO PATRIA ET LIBERTATE (With God for homeland and freedom)
