Description

The founder of the Gödöllő artists colony was Aladár Körösfői-Kriesch, who settled in the city in 1901. In the early 20th century, the colony he started was the centre of the Hungarian school of Secessionist (art nouveau) art and was renowned throughout Europe. After he purchased a house in the Erdő utca, a group of Tolstoyan/pre-Raphaelite artists quickly formed a colony which wanted to reform art by uniting work and life, on the basis of Christian principles of the home, love and the family. Working towards unifying applied art and fine art, they desired to create art which drew on ancient Hungarian folk motifs and would replace traditional bourgeois art.

Front: The front of this silver coin has the mandatory elements, the denomination 4000 Forint, the mint mark BP., the date 2001, the legend Magyar Köztársaság and the designer’s mark, framed by beautiful art nouveau edging and using the font style typical of the Secession movement.
Back:The back bears an image of the stained glass work Nővérek (Sisters) by Sándor Nagy and Miksa Róth, along with the legend ‘100 ÉVES A GÖDÖLLŐI MŰVÉSZTELEP’.
