Description
The second coin set of the series “The Golden Forints of Medieval Hungary” commemorates the golden forint of Louis I. The motifs of Hungarian gold forint coins underwent significant changes during the reign of Louis I (the Great) (1342-1382). The first gold coins in Hungary were minted by his father Charles I (Charles Robert I) on the model of the Florentine gold coins. In the next version, the Florentine lily on the obverse was replaced by the Hungarian-Anjou coat of arms, while the reverse continued to show St John the Baptist. The reverse of the third type of coin showed King Saint Lazarus of Hungary with his main attribute, the halberd (the coat of arms remained on the obverse). This design of coin was produced, with some variations, until the end of the 16th century. The coin set contains circulation coins of 5-10-20-50-100-200 forints minted in 2013 in proof quality, as well as a fictitious version of the gold forint of Louis. The medal size (3.491 g and 20 mm in diameter), is made of .999 silver, gold-plated and bears the mintmark and hallmark of the Hungarian Mint (BP).
