Description
Lajos Berán (1882–1943) was one of the leading Hungarian medal artists of the first half of the 20th century. Although his work is often primarily associated with the creation of medals, his artistic activity extended far beyond this: he also played a significant role in designing the coins of the pengő currency system. From 1931 until his death, he served as the chief engraver of the Hungarian Royal State Mint, overseeing its artistic output. In addition, Berán worked in a wide range of other genres: he created public sculptures, memorial plaques, tombs, religious artworks, small sculptures, and graphics, and he designed decorations, badges, and stamps, while also contributing to book cover designs. This publication presents not only his medallic work but also explores Berán Lajos’s diverse and often lesser-known artistic activities. Based on years of research, the authors present the most significant works of his career in thematic groups, accompanied by extensive notes. This is the first comprehensive book to fully document the life and work of Lajos Berán.
