Description

Peter Lax is a Hungarian-born American mathematician, who was born on 1 May 1926. A professor of mathematics, Lax mainly focused on applied mathematics, with his key research fi elds including the theory of partial differential equations, fl uid dynamics and computational science. He won the Wolf Prize in Mathematics in 1987 for his“outstanding contributions to many areas of analysis and applied mathematics”. In 2005, he was awarded the Abel Prize for his “for his groundbreaking contributions to the theory and application of partial differential equations and to the computation of their solutions.” Peter Lax earned his degree at New York University and worked there for most of his life.

Front:Referring to Lax’s life work on the symbiosis of theoretical, applied and computational mathematics, the front of the
coin depicts curves symbolising waves and wave movements, along with the mandatory coin elements. The compulsory design elements: the inscription ‘MAGYARORSZÁG’, the value numerals ‘2000′, the mint mark ‘BP’ and the mint year ‘2022’ are also on the obverse.
Back: The back of the coin shows Lax writing on an imaginary blackboard. The circular legend on the back left edge reads “WOLF-DÍJ 1987, ABEL-DÍJ 2005” (Wolf Prize 1987, Abel Prize 2005), with the legend “LAX PÉTER” (Peter Lax) above and the mathematical symbol of a partial differential equation below. The mark of the coin’s designer Andrea Horváth is found on the bottom back
edge, integrated into the image.
