Description

László József Bíró (1899-1985) was a Hungarian inventor, journalist, and painter, whose most famous invention is the ballpoint pen (biro). This commemorative coin is a part of the series of coins presenting Hungarian engineers, inventors, and their technical novelties and inventions.

Front: The front of the coin bears a stylised image based on the technical drawing of the ballpoint pen. To the right above the device, one finds the date “2010”, with the following legends in three horizontal lines at the left bottom: the mint mark “BP.”, the denomination “1000” and “FORINT” and “MAGYAR KÖZTÁRSASÁG”.
Back:The back of the coin has a portrait of László József Bíró. Above the portrait in two horizontal lines are the legends “A GOLYÓSTOLL” and “SZABADALMAZTATÓJA”, with the text “BÍRÓ”, “LÁSZLÓ” and “JÓZSEF” located to the left in three horizontal lines. The master mark of designer György Szabó is in the lower left corner of the coin.
