Description
The Member States hold the rotating presidency of the European Union, in an order officially established in advance until 2030. Every year in June and December, the formal meetings of the European Council comprising the heads of government and state close the six-month presidencies. Member States holding the rotating presidency work together in groups of three, called ‘trios’. Hungary held the presidency for the first time from 1 January to 30 June 2011, working within the framework of the Spain-Belgium-Hungary trio between 1 January 2010 and 30 June 2011. Hungary will hold the presidency of the Council of the EU for the second time from 1 July to 31 December 2024, again within the framework of the Spain-Belgium-Hungary trio.
As its motto, the Hungarian presidency chose the following: ‘Make Europe Great Again’. In keeping with this motto, its programme places strong emphasis on boosting the EU’s global competitiveness and adopting the new European competitiveness deal; strengthening the European defence industry; advancing consistent, merit-based enlargement policies; stemming illegal migration; shaping the future of cohesion policy; pursuing a farmer-centred EU agricultural policy; and addressing demographic challenges.
