Description

György Békésy (1899 – 1972) was a Hungarian biophysicist, who lived in the United States. He was awarded the 1961 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for his research on the function of the cochlea in the mammalian hearing organ. Thanks to his research, we understand how humans hear. The principle of the audiometer which he developed continues to be used in hearing tests today.

Front: The front of the coin depicts the main results of Békésy’s research, showing the propagation of sound waves in the cochlea. Integrated into the image of the cochlea is the legend “BÉKÉSY GYÖRGY A BELSŐ FÜL CSIGÁJÁBAN LÉTREJÖVŐ INGERÜLETEK FIZIKAI MECHANIZMUSÁNAK FELFEDEZÉSÉÉRT KAPOTT FIZIOLÓGIAI ÉS ORVOSTUDOMÁNYI NOBEL-DÍJAT 1961-BEN” (1961 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for György Békésy for his discoveries of the physical mechanism of stimulation within the cochlea) on the inside and the frequencies “200 Hz 400 Hz 600 Hz 800 Hz 1000 Hz 1500 Hz 2000 Hz 3000 Hz 4000 Hz 5000 Hz 7000 Hz 20000 Hz” on the outside. The mark of Zoltán Endrődy, who designed the front of the coin, can be found to the middle right. The front has the mandatory elements, such as the legend “MAGYARORSZÁG”, the mint mark “BP.”, the date “2022” and the denomination “2000” and “FORINT”.
Back: A portrait of the Nobel laureate is found on the back, with the legend “BÉKÉSY GYÖRGY” “NOBEL-DÍJ ● 1961 ●” to the left in three lines. The mark of sculptor Zoltán Kovács, who designed this side, is found on the left.
