Description
Count Lajos Batthyányi was the first prime minister of the Kingdom of Hungary. A martyr of the 1848–1849 Revolution and War of Independence, he held the office of prime minister from 17 March 1848 until 2 October 1849. Count László Teleki wrote of him, “He was a martyr to a grand, beautiful cause, who gave his soul back to God, but who will live on in our hearts eternally, his memory sustained until the last breath of the last Hungarian.”
Front: The front of the coin has the mandatory elements (the denomination 20000 FORINT, the legend MAGYAR KÖZTÁRSASÁG, the mint mark BP. and the date 1998), along with the master mark. The front features an image of the Third Class Hungarian Military Merit Order of 1848–1849.
Back:The back has a half portrait of Lajos Batthyány, with the legend “BATTHYÁNYI LAJOS” and the years of birth and death of the first constitutional prime minister and martyr.
